Early in September, 1887, the lateEmperor William appointed Mr.Nordheimer to the honorable posi-tion of Imperial German Consul forthe Province of Ontario, and tohim the British Government issuedthe Exequator. It can be truly saidthat the numerous Germans in theProvince of Ontario, and more par-ticularly those residing in Toronto,hailed the appointment with feel-ings of sincere pleasure, fully awarethat the duties of the office attachedto the appointment, would, underthe care of Mr. Nordheimer, be con-ducted with business despatch, areadiness to furnish all desirable in-formation, and add greatly to theinterests of Canadian merchantshaving business relations with Ger-many. Still holding this honorableappointment, Mr. Nordheimer isserving the country of his birth, andas a British subject, his adoptedfatherland.

MR. A. G. MACKAYLeader of the Liberal Party in Ontario Mr. A. G. MacKay, the new Leader of the Opposition in the Ontario Legislature,assumes the leadership of the Party with a clean public record. It is true that he wasfor a short time a member of the Ross Government which was so overwhelminglydefeated in the last election, but none of the reputation v/hich attaches to that Cabinetrests on Mr. MacKay. He comes from Owen Sound, where, for a number of years hepracticed law. That he stands well with the public is shown by the fact, on hisreturn to Owen Sound after his selection for the leadership, one of the first men tocongratulate him and bear testimony to his ability was Mr. James McLaughlan, theprincipal leader of the Conservative Party in that district. Mr. MacKay owes hispromotion to his own ability. The Globe employed him as counsel in an importantlibel action and the editor was so struck with the intelligent way in which he handledthe case that, on his return to Toronto, he saw t
