Ink and brush drawing from a handwritten copy of the anonymous textDingchuang yaojue(Essential Art of Boils), executed in 1874 (13th year of the Tongzhi reign period of the Qing dynasty). It indicates the disease location forerchui ding(boil on the earlobe). If found towards the top of the earlobe, this is treated with needling and opening (tiaoci) atbailao(Hundred Labours) -- i.e.dazhui(Great Vertebra),qijie(Seventh Segment), the tip of the shoulder,jianjing(Shoulder Well), and the second cervical certebra. If found lower down, it is treated with needling and opening at the base of the thumb, either side of the upper lip, and in the Tiger's Mouth (hukou) - the area between the thumb and the index finger.Qinggan liangge san(liver-clearing and diaphragm-cooling powder) andliuwei jieyun tang(six-flavour anger-dispelling decoction) are administered orally.
