Nederlands: Deze boogharp met 5 snaren (3 ontbreken) heeft een houten klankkast die bekleed is met slangenvel, en een gebogen ivoren hals. Deze is deels glad, deels uitgesneden in de vorm van een knielende vrouw met een mand of pot op haar hoofd. In de verlenging hiervan zitten 4 houten pennen (1 ontbreekt) voor de snaren. De top van de hals toont een mannenkopje. In de klankkast is van boven tot beneden -horizontaal- een soort 'brug' aangebracht waaraan de snaren bevestigd worden. In het klankbord bevinden zich twee klankgaten.
Dit muziekinstrument verscheen, onder invloed van de koloniale aanwezigheid, pas aan het eind van de 19e eeuw bij de Mangbetu. Antropomorf gefigureerde boogharpen waren al langer in gebruik bij de buurvolkeren van de Mangbetu, zoals de Azande. De Mangbetu zouden deze muziekinstrumenten hebben overgenomen omdat er door Europeanen, vooral Belgen, veel werden besteld. Harpen zijn individuele tokkelinstrumenten die geen deel uitmaakten van ensembles (Schildkrout and Keim 1990: 198 en Burssens 1992: 37-38). Veel instrumenten zijn later speciaal voor Europeanen gemaakt, waaronder waarschijnlijk dit exemplaar. Een mogelijkheid is tevens dat deze harp niet van de Mangbetu zelf is. De pennen voor de snaren zitten links, terwijl de Mangbetu ze aan de rechterzijde hebben (Burssens 1992: 37). |
