Nederlands: Deze bronsgieterij werkt via de 'verloren was' oftewel 'à cire perdue' techniek.
Rond 1915 werden door de bronsgietende families in Ouagadougou voor het eerst bronzen figuren gemaakt die scènes uit het dagelijks leven uitbeeldden. Vroeger was brons het metaal van aanzien en prestige, alleen de vorsten, rijke krijgsheren en handelaren konden en mochten het zich veroorloven. Het werken met dit metaal was eeuwenlang grotendeels in handen van slechts enkele families (Derme en Toure), nu werken er verschillende families van bronsgieters in de Niogsin wijk van Ouagadougou. Zij zijn afstammelingen van deze oude families, voormalig leerlingen met hun eigen werkplaats en families die generaties lang elders met brons werkten en die nu naar de stad gekomen zijn. De bronzen worden meestal op bestelling gemaakt en dit type beeldjes wordt vaak aan toeristen verkocht, populaire figuren zijn o.a. de scènes uit het dagelijks leven, maskers en dieren. De huidige bronsstijl wordt tevens beïnvloed door de kunstcentra waarbinnen jonge kunstenaars experimenteren met nieuwe ontwerpen. Zodra ze met iets nieuws komen wordt dit vaak onmiddellijk gekopieerd door de verschillende werkplaatsen in de wijk. Bronzen uit Ouagadougou zijn in heel West-Afrika befaamd. Zij worden in deze regio vaak doorverkocht via Mossi, Hausa en Djoula handelaren. Toeristen brengen ze mee naar het Westen en Afrikaanse kunst galerieën bieden ze hier te koop aan. |
