Nederlands: Beelden van de Lobi zijn niet bedoeld als representaties van de voorouders, maar worden gebruikt als helper van een geest of heiligdom. Het zijn 'thibila thil: personen (tibila) die een 'geest' of 'heiligdom' (beiden 'thil' genoemd, meervoud 'thila') helpen in hun dagelijks werk onder de mensen (ook 'tibila' genoemd).
De beelden die behoren tot de categorie 'bateba phuwe', zoals dit exemplaar, worden in een heiligdom opgesteld om het gevaar te weren dat afkomstig kan zijn van kwaadwillende mensen. Ze komen tot leven tijdens rituele plechtigheden, en kunnen ook sterven. Dit laatste gebeurt wanneer ze in verval raken of als de geest in wiens heiligdom ze staan (de zgn. thila) hen verlaat. |
