Nederlands: Hoge kandelaar versierd met geometrische patronen, inscripties (anonieme eretitels) in cartouches en blazoenen (samengestelde wapens, met in het middenvlak de pennendoos als symbool voor de ambtenaar).
Deze stijl en techniek zijn typerend voor Syrië en Egypte in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw. De stijl wordt neo-Mamluks (Engels: Revival Mamluk) genoemd, naar de Mamlukken die het gezag over Egypte en Syrië voerden van 1250 tot 1517. Hun regeerperiode staat bekend om de hoge kwaliteit van ingelegde metalen objecten zoals kandelaars, lampen, Koran-opbergdozen en bekkens. De belangstelling voor deze oude en goed-gemaakte objecten nam weer toe in de 19de eeuw, onder invloed van Europeanen die tijdens hun reizen graag oude of authentieke objecten wilden aanschaffen. Aangezien deze schaars waren, had dit een heropleving van de oude ambachten tot gevolg. Deze waren echter niet alleen bestemd voor de toeristenmarkt. Ze werden ook gemaakt voor lokale verkoop, om te dienen in woonhuizen en moskeeën: in de Ottomaanse tijd werden er vaak twee grote kandelaars aan weerszijden van de mihrab in moskeeën geplaatst. Ook werden kandelaars in neo-Mamlukse stijl gemaakt voor plaatselijke synagogen. De technische uitvoering van deze kandelaar is van hoge kwaliteit. De gebruikte siermotieven zijn typisch voor deze opleving. De inscripties zijn betekenisvol in de zin dat ze goed leesbare eretitels voorstellen die in de Mamlukse tijd refereerden naar de opdrachtgevers. Mogelijk had men een Arabisch-lezende clientèle voor ogen (voor Europeanen werden ook vaak pseudo-inscripties gebruikt). Het ontbreken van een eigennaam duidt erop dat het object was gemaakt voor de open markt. |
