[edit]DescriptionCalifornia (MODIS 2017-08-20).jpg |
English: Thick fingers of fog were reaching over San Francisco Bay on August 12, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite flew overhead and acquired a true-color image of the scene.
The image clearly shows that the fog is a part of the marine layer – a mass of cool, dense air from the ocean that becomes sandwiched beneath a layer of warm air as part of a temperature inversion. Intrusions of the marine layer – and the accompanying fog and clouds – are common in San Francisco in the summer. This is caused by westerly breezes that push cold air inland to replace the warm air rising from California’s Central Valley. |
