188 CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME Lake Description Eagle Lake is located in the northern Sierra Nevada at 1557 m (5100 ft) elevation (Figure 1). Its high pH and electrical conductivity are character- istic of semi-desert lakes (Table 1). The north and middle basins are shallow, while the south is deeper; only the south stratifies during the summer. The seasonal inflow (mostly in winter and spring) and high summer evaporation result in a fluctuating lake level and variation in chemical characteristics. The lake is slightly alkaline and hardness results from moderately high concentrations of magnesium ion.
