St. Matthew.—An ecclesiastical parish formed,1870, out of the parish of St. Andrew the Less.Church built 1866. An octagonal brick struc-ture, with transepts on four sides. An easternarm forms the chancel. There are N. and S.porches and W. belfry. Three bells. Roof sur-mounted by octagonal lantern. Register, 1870. Holy SepidcJire (? Above these a tier of eightarches, each enclosing two small ones with dis-tinct shafts, capitals varied and with groininghave Norm, enrichments. Over second tier ofarches there were until church restored, 1845, byC. C. S. eight inserted Perp. windows. Thesewere replaced by windows in Norm, style. Thecircular clerestory has vaulted conical roof, sub-stituted by C. C. S. for low, round, embattledtower. This circular portion forms principalentrance to church by good Norm, doorway(zigzag ornament), with aisles and embattledturret. One bell and priests bell. A view of thechurch in supposed original state in Archceologia(vol. vi.). The early volumes of the Ecclesiologistfurnish a record of its vicissitudes.
