ner MaschinenbauA-G. The general type is thatknown as the Outrance of theFrench Northern Railway, but withinside cylinders. The capability re-quired was to be able to haul from300 to 320 tons at speeds of from 30to 40 miles per hour up continuedgrades of 1 in 166, or loads of 350 tons at 50 to 55 miles per hour overgradients of 1 in 285. The designhad to conform to the requirementsof the Argentine railways, but other-wise the builders were allowed tofollow the standards adopted by the Prussian State Railways. A Schmidtsuperheater is provided, and Schmidtpiston valves are used, actuated by Walschaert valve gear. It is now necessary to deal withthe Atlantic type, though to someextent this is going out of use infavor of the 4-6-0 type, in view ofthe greater power capacity that thelatter affords. Still, however, whenthe main requirement is boiler power, and with four-coupled wheels and abig boiler all demands can be com-plied with, there is yet a good field REMARKABLE LOCOMOTIVES OF 1910 109.

In Great Britain 4-4-2 locomotivesstill remain standard on severallines, the Great Northern, GreatCentral, North Eastern and NorthBritish in particular. On the GreatNorthern Mr. Ivatts standard 4-4-2express locomotives have been devel-oped by the employment of Schmidtsuperheaters, larger cylinders andlower pressures, the result being adecided amplification of power ca-pability. On the North Eastern Railway anew series of 4-4-2 express enginesis under construction which willhave three high-pressure cylindersand a Schmidt superheater. A few years ago an interestingseries of Atlantic engines, com-pounded with four cylinders, was in-troduced on the Danish State Rail-ways, designed by Mr. O.
