Height, 272 inches; length, 37^2 inches A placid irregular stream, extending nearly across the foreground, sweeps awayto the middle distance, where it disappears between the low banks of a broadmeadow. In the foreground on the right, under a clumj) of trees, a few cowsare wandering down to the shallow water to drink, and on the left, growing outof the low bank, is a tall slender tree with crooked trunk, rising high above arow of pollard willows near the waters edge. The light of the sky is concen-trated near the middle of the com))osition, just above the horizon, where thestrong rays of the setting sun accentuate with vigorous touches the edges ofstorm clouds which are tossed and torn by the wind, and is repeated in a modi-fied strength by reflections in the still water in the near foreground. The wholelandscape is in the gathering gloom of twilight. Si<jned at tlie luioer left, Jules Dupiie. Collection M. Edouarii Kums, Antwerp, 1898. y J_ O-*^ Purchased from M. Kxoedleb & Co.
