The studies pursued in the collegiate classes are designed tocover the liberal culture afforded by the best colleges. Thiscourse is open to Normal graduates free of any fees, but theymust first have completed the Normal Course. Elective System. As the first College under the auspices of Mr. Jefferson torecognize the principle of the elective system, which it did asearly as 1779, the College still adheres to his wise policy. Underthe rules of the institution all Normal graduates taking theCollegiate Course, and all students paying a tuition fee of $35.00for the session, are permitted to exercise their choice as to theschools attended. But the requirement is that they must take asmany branches as will demand an attendance in the lecture-roomnot exceeding twenty-two hours a week and not less than fifteenhours a week.

30 William axd Mary College. Degrees. The collegiate degrees are: Bachelor of Literature (B. Lit.),Bachelor of Arts (A. B.), and Master of Arts (A. M.). Bachelor of Citerature. This degree requires (1) graduation in French and German,(2) graduation in either (a) English and General History, or(&) Latin and Greek, and proficiency in the sub-seniorclasses ofthe schools in (a) and (&) not graduated in; and (3)proficiencyin Psychology, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, American Historyand Politics. The student must select as his principal subjecteither French and German, or English and General History, orLatin, or Greek; and in such principal subject he shall berequired to do special work under the guidance of his professor.If French and German be his principal subject, the student mustgraduate in English and in General History. Bachelor of Arts. This is the old graduating degree of the College. In order todefine this degree the schools of theCollege are divided into three groups,as
