So ought men, to whom good giftshave been in like manner variously distributed,to be content with that which they have sever-ally received. It has been suggested that all these are butthe outward signs of love. It may be, there-fore, that on the one side the bird which hasa good voice and plain dress, pours forth hislove, and shows his sympathy, in gushingstrains, wThieh are addressed to the ear of hismate; again, the bright plumaged bird uttershis voiceless song by the vivid hues that flashfrom his glittering attire, the eye being theonly medium through w-hich his partner, whoseears are not attuned to melody, could realizethe fullness of his utterance. The one showershis musical tones like vocal rainbows, and theother scatters his rays of many-colored lightin flashing hues or blending tints, and whetherin sweet song or glittering vesture, the creatureutters the love and sympathy of its nature.
