Illustration of Leaking House Pulse (wulou mai) fromRenyuan maiying guizhi tushuo(Pictorial Handbook of Pulse Images Based on the Person). This is a specialist text on pulse diagnosis attributed to the third-century master Shuhe, edited and revised by Shen Jifen in the Ming period (1368-1644). It discusses various pulse images and the medical conditions to which they relate, and contains 48 pulse image diagrams. This undated edition was engraved and published in Japan.The text states: Leaking House Pulse is one of the Sixteen Weird Pulses (guai mai). It is also known as Sick Corpse (bing shi) pulse. The pulse image of Leaking House Pulse is likened to drips of water trickling through a roof, repeatedly merging into a stream. The pulse pauses, between breaths, after every three 'drips' . It is abundant as it arrives, and feeble as it passes away. If this pulse is found in an elderly patient, death will ensue within ten days; in a young person, death will ensue in three days. If it occurs at the spleen location, the patient will die within one day. Woodblock print |
