feredheavily, none of Bartholomews men were killed, and onlyone other besides himself was wounded. The next daythe mutineers all came in to surrender, submitting anabject oath of allegiance; and Columbus, always strangelymagnanimous to rebels and insurgents, pardoned themall with the exception of Francisco de Porras, who, one isglad to know, was confined in irons to be sent to Spainfor trial. This submission, which was due to the prompt actionof Bartholomew rather than to the somewhat feeble diplo-macy of the Admiral, took place on March 20th, and provedsomewhat embarrassing to Columbus. He could put nofaith in the oaths and protestations of the mutineers; andhe was very doubtful about the wisdom of establishingthem once more on the wrecks with the hitherto orderlyremnant. By this means the last month or twoof this most trying and exciting sojourn on the islandof Jamaica were passed in some measure of peace; andtowards the end of June it was brought to an end bythe arrival of two caravels. One of them was the shippurchased by Diego Mendez out of the three which hadarrived from Spain ; and the other had been despatchedby Ovando in deference, it is said, to public feeling inSan Domingo, which had been so influenced by Mendezsaccount of the Admirals heroic adventures that Ovandodared not neglect him any longer.
