Description
English: A massive bank of cloud covered the Pacific Ocean off of Baja California, Mexico, in mid-June 2019, stretching hundreds of miles from north to south and from east to west. The marine stratocumulus clouds parted around Guadalupe Island, a volcanic island with terrain tall enough to interrupt the flow of wind. The turbulence created when wind strikes the island forms swirling eddies on the downwind side of the island. On this day the wind was blowing from the northwest, as evidenced by the swirls in the clouds on the southeast side of Guadalupe Island. The eastern edge of the cloud bank covers the coast of Baja California as low cloud (fog). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image on June 20, 2019.
