Insurance Commissioner Carr, of Maine,recently completed an examination of theaffairs and condition of the Union Mutual.He pi-aises the company for the highcharacter of its assets and the increase ofnet suipkis, and finds evidence of com-mendable caution in the selection ofrisks. The present management, while ad-hering to the conservative pi-actices ofthe past, have also struck out some newlines which are adding to the popularityof the company. President Richards isa strong man in the financial world, andVice-President Bates, who has been con-nected with the company for twenty-sixyears, is a strong man in the insuranceworld, and the two men make a powerfulteam in the management of this oldMaine company.

We feol justified in saying- tliat there issome improvement in the pi-ospeets ofreorganization. The only dilTerence nowis the construction, the phraseology infact, of a non-intercourse clause. On oneside are two or three offices; on the otherside are the i-omainder. The minority,and their objections, remind us of thetwelfth juror who pronounced the elevenstubborn. The contention of the minority is thatthe majoritys several non-intercourseclauses leave loop-holes for dealing- withnon-board companies. It would be asimple matter, and far better for all con-cerned, to try one of these clauses andsee. It is not like a law of the Medes andPersians, unchangeable. The majority,we are sure, wall not hesitate to repealthe clause if it fosters non-board inter-course. The majority is as anxious asthe minority for protection from non-board competition, and quite as keen-eyed in the discovery of
