Title

Description
English: A complete, Roman Republican, struck or hammered, silver, denarius of Mark Anthony (83-30 BC). The coin celebrates the 'Legionary' coinage of Mark Anthony produced at his travelling mint at the winter headquarters at Patrae just prior to the Actian campaign and honoured twenty-three legions (LEG PRI to LEG XXIII). These coins were struck in enormous numbers. Obverse: Roman galley with banners at prow right. Inscription: ANT AVGIII.VIR.R.P.C

Reverse: LEG II legionary eagle between two standards. Inscription: (L)EG[]. Mint name: Travelling mint. Reece Period 1. Die axis: 6 o'clock. The coin is in poor, very worn condition, especially the reverse with light grey patina and some recent scratches on both sides by the plough or similar.

The likely date for this coin is 32-31BC. Ref. Coins of England and the UK, Spink 2009, page 48 no. 457, Roman Coins and their Values, The Millenium Edition, David R.
