En el primer artículo de las capitulaciones que los SeñoresReyes Católicos ajustaron con D. Cristóbal Colon en la villa deSanta Fé á 17 de Abril de 1492, prometieron hacerle desde luegosu Almirante de todas las islas y Tierra-firme que descubriese,no solo durante su vida sino para sus sucesores, con todas laspreeminencias y prerogativas que gozaban los Almirantes de Cas-tilla en sus distritos. En cumplimiento de este pacto le expidie-ron en 30 del mismo Abril el título de Almirante; y algunosaños después mandaron darle copias autorizadas de todas las car-tas de merced, privilegios y confirmaciones que tenia D.
