This large and handsome bird, which is the next in pointof size after the Eagle-Owl, belongs to the more northernregions of Europe, Asia, and America; is well known andplentiful in Greenland, in Hudsons Bay, and in the islandsof the Arctic Sea. Although the Snowy Owl is able to bearthe severest cold, it migrates towards the south during thewinter season. The cry of this bird has been compared to the gruntingof pigs, or the lamentations of a person in great danger. In their actions they are as agile as the Hawks ; and intheir flight bear more resemblance to them than
