are as follows :—Entire length nineteen inches; the wing, from the carpus tothe tip, nearly six inches; the tail two inches. The top of the head is black reflected with green ; a streakover the eye yellow; the chin white ; the cheeks, neck, sides ofthe neck, and loose feathers of the breast ochre-yellow, the lattertinged with violet; the crop and front of the throat paleochre-yellow ; some elongated feathers on the sides of theupper part of the breast margined with dusky and richbrownish yellow; the remainder of the under parts yellow;the under tail-coverts and inner sides of the thighs whitish.The shoulders, back, rump, and tail-coverts are black withgreen reflections ; the spurious wing partly black ; the greaterand lesser wing-coverts are ochre-yellow ; the quills are dusky.The beak is rich gamboge-yellow ; the iris gold-yellow. AMERICAN BITTERN. 167 GRALLA TORES, A RDE1DJE. PLATE CLXX. AMERICAN BITTERN. ARDEA LENTIGINOSA. The American Bittern is a rare visitant in Great Britain,but is, as its name denotes, an indigenous inhabitant ofAmerica, migrating northward on that continent, for thepurpose of breeding, as far as the Hudsons Bay about themonth of May, and retiring southward to pass the inclementwinter season in milder regions. Selby states, in his Illustra-tions of British Ornithology, that the specimen which is now inthe British Museum belonged to Montagus collection, and wasshot in the parish of Piddleton, in Dorsetshire, in the autumnof 1804. Our drawing was made from the same specimen, which wasat the time in good preservation. The locality chosen by this bird is similar to that of ourBittern, namely, banks of lakes, rivers, and ponds, wherereeds and rushes give the bird shelter during the day-timeand food at night; for, like others of its family, this Bitternsleeps during the day in thickets of wate
