| Description |
On the left is Butler Library, the largest building on campus and the main humanities library, dating back to 1934. On the right is Alfred Lerner Hall, the student activities center, which was built in the late 1990s. It replaced Ferris Booth Hall, which had been built in 1959 and was proving to be woefully inadequate by the 1990s. Behind Lerner is Carman, which was built with Ferris Booth as an integrated structure; it is a freshman dorm, and has remained in use during and after the Lerner construction. For timed exposures at night, Columbia University is about as photogenic a venue as I can find. Columbia University is located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, bordering Harlem to the north and east and Upper West Side to the south. The McKim, Meade, and White architectural team designed the current campus in the late 1890s, replacing older campuses further downtown. Columbia University is one of the eight members of the prestigious Ivy League; the other seven, all in the Northeastern US, are Dartmouth, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Cornell, Princeton, and Pennsylvania. |
