the Long Bridge. The Regi-ment there again attracted the attention as well as the admira-tion of the citizens, and also of the army officers who re-viewed it, on account of the soldierly bearing and proficiencyexhibited by the men. En route to the Bridge, within avery short distance of it, a very welcome, suitable, andappreciative halting-place was found—that of a historic andancient pump, noted for the refreshing draughts with whichit had already regaled many a thirsty soldier on the long,hard march; for our boys i^ere dry, and therefore quaffedthe water with a relish. No wonder, for the day was in-tensely hot, and the men had to plod their way through thickbeds of dust, while yet their eyes were greeted with heavyclouds of dust floating before them, in the atmosphere andthe foregrounds on the opposite shores of the Potomac River. TheRegiment finally arrived on the Virginia shore, only to meeta reception not by any means welcome, desirable, or appre-ciative—which all the men will ever remember—that of animmense cloud of dust arising from the Government corralsprovided for the mules and cattle, as it had the tendency toalmost strangulate the boys. After passing Fort Albany to the left, which was the firstpoint of interest to be observed on our march into Virginia,the Regiment arrived at an already organized camp uponArlington Heights, known as Camp Stanton, and located ina peach orchard, where the necessary camp equipage wasprovided, and
