He was not what you would call a magnetic man, andyet in some way, not easilj sensed, he made deep impres-sion upon all who came in contact with him, and those whoknew him intimately esteemed him deeply,—so much,that at his funeral, men assembled from all parts of thestate; pioneers who had not left their homes for years andwhose faces were strange to the busy men of this decade,came down from their hermit homes in the hills to do himhomage.* And many an aged eye shed tears that day thatfor years had been dry: and almost every one had someincident, trivial in itself, attaching to their acquaintancethat they told to others in subdued tones, indicating howdeep rooted was their feeling for this man, and most of themindicating his gentleness, his goodness or his generosity.How much better the world is for having known the lifeof such a man can never be told in words.

John Caplice was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, inthe year 1829, and his destiny was to see much of the worldssorrow and mens struggle for supremacy, and to win hisway triumphantly and honorably through the contest. Inliis time he made and lost large fortunes. At the age oftwelve years his parents were dead and he commenced toearn his own way in life. Wlien he was twenty-one hesailed for America and hired himself to a farmer near Phila-delphia. Four years later he moved to Illinois. He en-gaged in coal mining in 1855 and later, in 1856, he took upsome land where Sioux City now stands. He was obligedto defend his title in the courts, lost his case, and also hismoney. He hired out next to a man who owned threeboats on the Missouri river and within three months boughtthe outfit and successfully continued the business until 1861.At the
