John Caplice was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, inthe year 1829, and his destiny was to see much of the worldssorrow and mens struggle for supremacy, and to win hisway triumphantly and honorably through the contest. Inliis time he made and lost large fortunes. At the age oftwelve years his parents were dead and he commenced toearn his own way in life. Wlien he was twenty-one hesailed for America and hired himself to a farmer near Phila-delphia. Four years later he moved to Illinois. He en-gaged in coal mining in 1855 and later, in 1856, he took upsome land where Sioux City now stands. He was obligedto defend his title in the courts, lost his case, and also hismoney. He hired out next to a man who owned threeboats on the Missouri river and within three months boughtthe outfit and successfully continued the business until 1861.At the
