t may be a participial phrase—examples, wise men; men of wisdom, men possessing wisdom. In the type-elements in the experience of life we need not only a single word but suchelements in a combination of w^ords in order to help us the better to expressourselves. There is need then of phrases and also of their scientific meaning.Literary phrases are of five classes: Prose; epithetic; figurative; emotionaland poetic. (For a complete treatment of phrases see number 36 in Bib-liography.) One way of using these phrases is to select and classify them as given inliterature. The following are excellent examples for use in classification. Literary Phrases from The Vision of Sir Launfal: musing organist .... chilly wall, loved instrument .... a charger. our infancy the maiden knight. great winds unscarred mail. faint hearts young knights heart. A phrase maysuggest: (1) An oral story; (2) A written one as in the case of the followingwhich was written by a seventh grade girl: THE KNIGHT. When I think of a knight, I think of a tall, broad shouldered, young man just ready tostart out on an errand of mercy. He is clothed in armor from head to foot. In his hand he carries a spear and on his arma shield. His pure, handsome, cleanly cut face looks but from neath a helmet which sets farover his massive forehead. His whole appearance suggests strength and skill and grace. He isseated on a large, snow-white charger
