Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Cotter Pumping Station is one of the key engineering features of Canberra's water supply system, which include Cotter Dam, the pipeline and the primary storage reservoir at Mt Stromlo. The two buildings forming the Pumping Station, the Pump House and Transformer House, are among the earliest permanent buildings constructed during the development of Canberra. They were designed by the first Chief Architect for the Commonwealth, John Smith Murdoch, who also designed the Old Parliament House and the Canberra Hotel. The Pumping Station was constructed between 1912 and 1915. The first two electrically powered pumps were installed in 1912 but were not put into operation until 1918. Over time, additional pumps have been installed to accommodate Canberra's growing water supply needs. The building architecture changed in 1963 so that motors and electrical gear for the additional pumps seven and eight could be installed on the upper floor, above the level of a major flood, but remained consistent with the Murdoch style. The pumps in the station are some of the oldest operating in the world.
