DescriptionCount Felix Graf and Countess Ingeborg von Luckner looking at a display case at Old Parliament House in Canberra (9595653782).jpg |
English: This photograph depicts Count Felix Graf von Luckner with wife Countess Ingeborg von Luckner (née Engeström), looking at a display case containing the Queen Victoria Writing Table at King's Hall in Old Parliament House, Canberra. The photograph was taken on 3 June 1938, during the count and countess' visit to Australia's capital city. The table was gifted to the newly formed Australian Parliament by Queen Victoria, after she gave her assent to the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Bill in 1900. Queen Victoria also gave the pen and inkstand she had used at Windsor Castle. The table is still on display (in 2013) in Members’ Hall on the first floor. Also in the background is the barometer which is also still part of the collection of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. For more information on Count von Luckner's visit see our blog post 'Espionage and paranoia: The Sea Devil tours Australia'. |
