Notes
  • 2004 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
  • Significance: In June of 1893, the Blacksmith Shop was constructed simultaneously with the Tether Wall to handle the increased blacksmithing needs of the fort. Their presence along the quadrangle and other significant buildings on the base, help to establish Fort Sam Houston as the largest assembly of historic structures on any active military installation in the United States. Although the use of the building has long since changed to a storage facility, the age and historical significance of the building and Tether Wall make it an important part of the Fort's history and worthy of preservation.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: N1462
  • Survey number: HABS TX-3303-27
  • Building/structure dates: 1893 Initial Construction
