Description |
Français : Cette œuvre se présente au spectateur comme une scène de théâtre. Le dépouillement du décor, encadré par de lourds rideaux, met en avant le face à face entre les deux personnages principaux : Athalie, la reine cruelle qui a usurpé le trône, et Joas, l’enfant innocent qui est en fait l’héritier légitime du royaume. L’expression des sentiments est particulièrement soulignée à travers la gestuelle et la position des personnages. Présentée au Salon de 1741, ce tableau rencontre un vif succès : le roi Louis XV en commande une copie au peintre (aujourd’hui conservée au musée des beaux-arts de Niort), puis le tableau est à nouveau copié par Clément Belle à destination de la Manufacture des Gobelins (conservé au musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres). |
