Traditionally, in old Turkish houses, a cumba is a trellised room partition extending as an external component on floors above ground level. Cantilevered off the building, these cumbas are supported by buttresses angled from the facade. They were most often used to expand floor area in wooden Turkish civil buildings and have come to define the style and aesthetic of certain neighbourhoods in towns and cities.

Cumba, eski Türk evlerinde zemin katın üstündeki katlarda dışa taşan şekilde yer alan kafesli oda bölmesidir. Konsol biçiminde yapıldığı için çökmelere karşı binanın ön cephesine yaslanan payandalarla desteklenir. Geleneksel Türk sivil mimarisinin genellikle ahşaba dayandığı dönem ve yerlerde yoğun olarak kullanılan bu yapı elemanı, şehirlerdeki Türk mahalle dokusunun üslubunda belirleyici olmuştur.
