Wikipedia Treks Madhyamaheshwar[edit]

Sumitadi, Can you please upload the photographs taken during our trek to Madhyamaheshwar last year under the following category- [[Category:Wikipedia Treks Madhyamaheshwar]]. Thanks. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 20:43, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

NASA images[edit]

You appear to be uploading images from NASA that already exist in Commons. I am not going to chase around trying to find out which ones they are. Many of them should be obvious and historic. Please check them. Secondarywaltz (talk) 04:12, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WHY WILL YOU NOT STOP! Secondarywaltz (talk) 04:39, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What I am uploading , some of them are in here but not all those important collections. Since software of commons checking, automatically talking care about copyright and duplicacy , why I can't upload so much valuable photos. Pls explain in detail. I HV written to and administrator of .commons regarding this.Regards . Sumita Roy Dutta (talk) 07:19, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That check for duplication is only recognizable by the software when it is uploaded with the same source. These are identical images from different NASA sources, but they are exactly the same in every other way. According to Template:Duplicate: "There should be only one exact copy of a file". The reason I found the duplicates is that the images are historic, and I couldn't believe that they had not been uploaded before. I think that everything you have just uploaded from the NASA Flickr site is already in Commons. 14:43, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
Indeed, I had been working on deleting some of these duplicates before I noticed this discussion. All of the images from "Great Images in NASA" (the ones with GPN-####-###### image numbers) were scraped by a bot directly from the GRiN website back in 2009. The 'duplicate image' checks only detect files from the same source, or files that are actually 'identical' (i.e., with the same checksum). The copies that were uploaded to Flickr have had the EXIF data altered, and that change unfortunately defeats the duplicate detection. Please search Commons for the NASA image id before uploading NASA images, especially from Flickr, as many of these images have been previously uploaded from NASA image archives.
Also, NASA images should use the {{PD-USGov-NASA}} and {{NASA-image}} templates 'as a best practice'. It's not required, but makes it easier to keep track. See Tiltrotor research aircraft hovering - GPN-2002-000192.jpg for an example. Unfortunately, the upload tools won't set that, unless you use them in a mode that allows you to manually edit the file page text before upload. It's again not required, tho.
Please don't take this as 'yelling at a new person', at least not from me. There are quite a few NASA images that we don't have, and your efforts are appreciated.... it's just that the NASA Flickr feed is really just a PR effort... these are almost all images that have long been available online from other NASA archives, and most of those were scraped by bots years ago. Just, please check if they already exist (our existing copies should all have the image ID) before uploading. Newer images (such as from the ISS) or images from are from specific missions (try checking out http://pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov/) are much more likely to not be here.
@Secondarywaltz: While I understand fully, less bite please? Revent (talk) 20:45, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Could you please add relevant categories to your Flickr uploads? Automatic catagorization only works if the Flickr user has used adequate tags. It's actually better to leave the uploads uncategorized to avoid filling up irrelevant categories (e.g. File:Queant, general view (near Arras) (19892641025).jpg) - then the files will automatically categorized in Category:Media needing categories as of DD MMM YYYY and Category:All media needing categories as of 2015 and will eventually be categorized correctly. - 4ing (talk) 13:57, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for suggestion. But I failed to understand what I should do? .before transferring mass file I should add relevant category to album or leave the uploads uncategorised. Thanks in advance. Sumita Roy Dutta (talk) 16:05, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When you use flickr2commons, the default setting is that categories are auto-detected (i.e., if there is a category on Commons with the same name as an image tag from Flickr, it will be added). Normally, I prefer to turn this option off, to avoid inadequate categorization (like File:Adolph Saphir and his teacher (5228099943).jpg and other photographs by Hill & Adamson, which were automatically put in Category:Hills). If you use automatic categorization, you should at least add the template {{Check categories}} to the images. It should also be used if you only do a high-level or limited categorization. You could take a look at how User:Fæ equips his/her mass uploads with categories and templates. - 4ing (talk) 21:37, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category[edit]

Sumitadi, When you are transferring files from FlickR, could you please add at least one relevant category of the source of the files? For example, if you are collecting scanned files from Mississippi Department of Archives and History, then can you please create and add Category:Files from Mississippi Department of Archives and History to the files. By the way, I have categorized your files from Texas State University under the following category Category:Files of Texax State University Library Digital Collections with bad file names where they will wait for filemovers or administrators to be renamed properly if possible. Thanks. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 00:19, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sumita,
I am not comfortable with a block of this length by an admin-colleague. However, you should have commented at the discussion about your uploads at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User:Sumita_Roy_Dutta. The upload-tool you had been using, is rather powerful and has the potential to result in a lot a maintenance work post-upload. --Túrelio (talk) 06:27, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Túrelio and all editors and admins who have supported me as new editor. I will place files in proper category, which I hv already uploaded, pls give me that opportunity and guidance. Thanks in advance. Sumita Roy Dutta (talk) 13:47, 12 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In this COM:ANU, here were also issues regarding uploads of duplicated files, what do you say about it? --A.Savin 20:43, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"The 'duplicate image' checks only detect files from the same source, or files that are actually 'identical' (i.e., with the same checksum). The copies that were uploaded to Flickr have had the EXIF data altered, and that change unfortunately defeats the duplicate detection. " . Some NASA files were duplicate file and explaination of technical fault explain by other admin I quoted here. When they requested I had stopped uploading NASA files. Its a community run by volunteers so by punishing we can't learn , what change do you expect after 15days! If you not guide us about rectifying fault. If mass upload is an offence(even those files are not there in commons),pls permenantly disable flickrtocommon part. Sumita Roy Dutta (talk) 04:42, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I would, indeed, concur that the uploading of duplicate NASA images is not Sumita's fault... it could have been avoided by specifically checking the image IDs, but their not being detected as duplicates automatically is a technical issue (and sometimes NASA even breaks the image IDs). There is a substantial amount of silly drama involved with NASA images, since they are often duplicated across multiple archives with trivial modifications, and the way they upload them to Flickr makes any kind of automatic detection difficult. Nobody who hasn't had some experience with the many inconsistencies and outright errors their archiving creates could be expected to know that their images posted to Flickr are probably already here, and tbh a substantial number (I'm working through them now) already had multiple dupes. Revent (talk) 08:31, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Sumita Roy Dutta: I would unblock you, if you promised to do uploads carefully (no more than ~100 files a day, with categories according to policy, no NASA stuff as long as the duplicate issues not solved), is it OK? --A.Savin 12:27, 15 October 2015 (UTC) OK thanks a lot.I will try my best ,pls guide me as and when reqd. I plan to make changes to the image you uploaded[edit]

Dear Sumita Roy Dutta, some time ago you have uploaded the image

on Wikimedia Commons. I have found the magazine where it was originally published, it is called Plamya and therefore it is possible to figure out the author: his name is Yakov Steinberg 1880 1942. Therefore, I want to update this information and remove the scratch (sign) from the photo. Alternatively, I can try to use the scan from the magazine, but it is much worse in quality (printed in 1918, 100 years ago!) than the image you uploaded. I think it is significant: the image shows the important historical figure in the important period. Do you have objections? --Armenius vambery (talk) 08:43, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pls go ahead for updating information about author and removing the scratch (sign) from the photo.

Thanks for adding your images to WikiProject Nature and conservation in India[edit]

Dear Sumita Roy Dutta,

Many thanks for adding some of your lovely and valuable images to this project. I noticed that you had added this category in couple of your relevant categories. Which is fine but no need to add those categories in the following page - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:WikiProject_Nature_and_conservation_in_India - As you would see in that page most of the categories will be name as - Photos by XXXXX...or Images by XXXXX. Instead it would be very useful if you could create a category something like "Nature photos by Sumita Roy Dutta" and then add that category in this page would be useful. Looking forward to see more of your nature related images in this Wikiproject. Thanks.

Hi Sumita Roy Dutta, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

You've recently added a Bengali translation to this file. Unfortunately, you've butchered it in the process:

  • Removed the Russian translation
  • Your version doesn't pass the SVG checks anymore (see the file's description infobox where the link to the checker is provided).

Could you please redo your translation to make sure it's done properly this time? I'm reverting it back to the previous good version for now. Please make sure you do it in a text editor (not Inkscape or similar) in order to keep it in a human-editable format. Please keep your changes straight-forward so that it's clear from the file diffs what exactly you've added/changed. Cherkash (talk) 22:22, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging you again. Please kindly fix your mistakes and re-upload. Cherkash (talk) 16:37, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No issue since I had uploaded a separate translated version which was marked for deletion, since before that I had uploaded switch version where I had mistakenly removed Russian version and edit was reverted. ( let individual version stay.). In the SVG campaign they need individual upload not the switch version.

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:06, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sumita Roy Dutta!

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.
