Shrubs, often spiny and prickly, withsimple, alternate, palniately veined lvs.: fls. 5-, rarely4-parted, borne singly or in racemes; calyx-tube co-herent with ovary; lobes commonly colored petals;usually small, borne on throat of calyx, alternatingwith stamens: fr. a berry, tipped with remains ofcalyx. I and II), Ribes containsfew plants that are generallyprized for cultivation. The most(Hipular ornamental species is theliutTalo Currant, Bibe.s aurexim,wiiich is hardy and productiveeverywhere. The hybrid li. Gor-donia)iHm is also popular for itslong clusters of bright pink flow-ers, its vigorous habit and itshardiness. B. sanguineum is alsofairly well known, and is hardy in the northeasternstates. There are horticultural forms with white, verydark red, and purple flowers.
