Historical Sketch. —Species of Orchids have longbeen known to botanists, butthe flrst plants were introducedinto hothouses scarcely over acentury ago. Plants were sentby missionaries and oflicerswho visited tropical countries.In IT.Sl, Bletia verecunda wasreceived in England from theWest Indies. In 1789, Commo-dore Gardner sent plants of Epi-dendrum fragrans from thewoods of Jamaica. One ofthese flowered two years afterand was the flrst Orchid figuredin the Botanical Magazine,plate 152, as E. cochleatum.Phiiius grandifolins had beenintroduced nine years beforeand the Vanilla was also knownin English conservatories. In1807 Martyns edition of Mil-lers Gardeners Dictionaryenumerated 124 Orchids. At first the wants of theseplants were little understood,and many perished from irra-tional treatment. But as moreand their natural climatic conditions became betterknown the plants were treated in accordance with theirrequirements.
