Fonnerly it was con-sidered impossible to grow the beautiful hardy hybridsin the New England states, but now it has been shownby such splendid collections as those of Mr. H. H.Hunnewell at Wellesley, Mass. (see A. F. 13:24-31 andGng. 5:375-377), that, even in a trying climate, they canbo grown to perfection if the right situations are se-lected and the right way of cultivation is followed. Where limestoneor heavy clay prevails, beds must be specially preparedand filled with suitable soil. They should be at least2 to 3 ft. deep, or deeper where the subsoil is not porous, and in this case the bottom should be filled in about1-2 ft. hi^h with gravel or broken stones for drainage.A mixture of leaf-mold or peat and sandy loam willmake a suitable soil. In dry spells during the summer, watering is necessary if the subsoil is not very moist;it is most essential that the soil never become reallydry. In the fall the ground should be covered withleaves, pine needles, hay or other material to protectfrom frost. This mulch should be allowed to remainduring the summer, especially where the plants are notlarge enough to shade the ground. An occasional top-dressing of well-decayed stable or cow
