Text Appearing Before Image:
importance to theplants, as Darwin has shown, in attracting insects andguiding them to the nectar, and hence to the pollen andstigmas of the plants. In Cypripedium and relatedgenera the lip has the form of a sac often compared toa shoe, as the name Ladys Slipper indicates. The sidesof the sac are folded inward, surrounding the column insuch a way that an insect which has entered the label-lum must crawl out through a narrow opening near theanther, which is thus brushed. Some of the pollenadhering to the body of the insect is thus carried to thestigma of another flower. One of the most common forms which the labellumassumes is that of a trumpet-like tube inclosing thecolumn. The front portion is expanded into a large,variously-shaped blade, which is often of a deeper colorthan the rest of the flower. The color becomes moreintense toward the tube or throat of the labellum. whichis further ornamented by ridges, crests, and markings, all of which serve to guide insects to the pollen masses
Text Appearing After Image:
ORCHID and stigmas. The trumpet form of the lip is characteristic of many of the most beautiful South AmericanOrchids, as Sobralia, Lselia, Cattleya, etc. In othergenera the labellum is variously modified. Sometimesit is small and petal-like, sometimes greatly expanded, forming the most conspicuous part of the flower (0»-cidmm tigrinum,OdontogIo!fsiim Londeshoronghianum), ORCHID 1161
