e nearly the entire growth, which wouldotherwise have been pruned away in spring, will havebeen employed in developing the reserved branches. While the cutting away of an occasional small branchmay be done at almost any time, large branches shouldbe removed only in case of actual necessity, and at aperiod early enough to permit the thorough drying andhardening of the cut surface prior to the movement ofthe sap in spring, as a means of preventing bleedingand consequent decay. Summer pruning tends to check rather than encour-age wood growth, and since it acts to a greater or lessextent as an obstruction to the circulation, it also tends,as does the permanent bending of the branches and thehardening of the tissues, to hasten the formation offruit-buds and the production of frtiit. The quince is the only dissimilar stock uponwhich the Pear is extensively grown. Quince stocks forthis purpose are largely imported from France. TheAngers quince is generally preferred for this purpose.These stocks aie usually planted in nursery rows at theage of two years, to be budded during the followingsummer, in the same manner as Pear stocks.
