Most of the spe-cies are shrubby, rarely exceeding 6 or 8 ft., and maybe used for borders of shrubberies or for coveringslopes and rocky ridges, especially i?. rugosa, R. hti-milis and various American species. Some kinds, likeM. rugosa and li. lucida, make handsome ornamentalhedges. The climbing species are used for coveringwalls, trelliswork, arbors, porches or pillars, but per-haps display their beauty to the most advantage whenallowed to ramble over shrubs or rocks. ROSA ROSA 1547 regard to the foliage the handsomest of the hardyRoses, with its dark green leathery and glossy leaves. Most of the species are hardy or almost hardy north,as A, rugosa, setigera, Carolina, Virginiana, lucida, hnmilis, canina, rnbiginoaa, spinosissima, alpina, ar-Iensis and ninUiflora. Some species, as -B. Wichurai-ana, sempervirens, seHcea, microphylla, Chinensis andJSglanteria, require protection north. Others, as H.Banksia, hracteata, Iwvigata and gigantea, are hardyonly south. With few exceptions the Roses are of easy cultivationand grow in almost any kind of soil, except in a looseand very sandy one. They are readily transplanted. The Wild Roses need little pruning; they should onlybe thinned out and the weak and old wood be removed;long and vigorous shoots should not be shortened, es-pecially in the climbing varieties, as these shoots arethe most floriferous. All true species can be propagated by seeds. Thehips should be gathered as soon as ripe, the seedswashed out
