rings dippinginto the oil wells. An important feature of the equip-ment is the arc lamp with its parabolic reflector. Itis strongly made, and care has been taken to insurea steady and constant light, free from flicker. The vertical beam is caused to project upwards byan auxiliary plane deflector, placed outside the goggleat an angle of 45 deg. and in such a position as tointercept about 40 per cent of the whole volume of lightissuing from the parabolic reflector and direct it ver-tically. This vertical beam forms a constant warningsignal. Reaching to a great height, and on cloudynights striking the clouds, it can be seen for manymiles. In fact, upon the Big Four road it has beenseen for a distance of 21 miles, and on the Chicago,Milwaukee and St. Paul road it has been seen for adistance exceeding 16 miles. The whole apparatus is generally mounted uponone cast-iron bedplate, and it is the work of only sixor ten hours to apply the equipment to the locomotive. 444 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING

The focus is maintained by specialmechanism, an adjustable guide being furnished forthe carbon. This guide bears in three points on thecarbon and permits of perfect adjustment regardlessof small differences in diameter of the latter.
