At midnight General Batess brigade reached the firing line and was assigned theextreme left of the position; General Lawtons division arrived at 7 oclock in themorning of the 2d and deployed to the right of the cavalry. The Americans were aware that the second Spanish position was possibly strongereven than the first, and the troops lost no time in fortifying themselves as best theycould against a possible surprise in the night. By the break of day the whole Ameri-can line was entrenched, the cannon behind emplacements. The Thirty-fourthMichigan and Ninth Massachusetts Volunteers, of General Duffields brigade, reachedthe front to act as a reserve. When daylight came on the 2d of July the battle was renewed. But this timethe Americans were protected, and it was soon felt that they could easily hold theirground. When the Spaniards attempted an attack, towards 10 oclock in the fore-noon, they were easily repulsed at all points.

Infantrya soldier was hit in the chest, and in his agony jumped up and rolled over the em-bankment toward the side of the enemy. First Lieutenant Ira C. Welborn, whowas right behind his men on the line, seeing this got up and carried the woundedman back into a place of safety. The act was done without paying the slightestattention to the danger of the whizzing Mauser bullets; Welborn received for it theMedal of Honor. At 9 oclock in the evening there was another alarm. An American advance postwas attacked by the Spaniards, and soon the lines were firing again. But this wasonly of short duration, yet not without casualties, among them the commander ofLawtons brigade. General Hawkins, who received a wound in the leg. The night of the 2d to the 3d of July was passed again in the trenches. Thehardships of the troops were fearful. The soldiers were lying in the ditches half-filledwith water; there was absolute
