The little town of New Ulm, founded by Germans, was the main settlement, anddistant about eighteen miles from Fort Ridgley. The inhabitants of this place andthe surrounding settlers, mostly Germans and Scandinavians, had not the slightestfear of an outbreak, as they had all aided the distressed and starving Reds to theirbest ability and felt sure of their friendship. On the 17th of August the citizens of this peaceful town were startled by theappearance of a company of volunteers, mostly half-breed Indians, which had beenmustered in by Uncle Sams officials for the protection of the agencies. On the 18th of August a fleeing white man aroused the people of New Ulm, withthe terrifying cry that the Indians were on the warpath and were coming. At hisheels came fugitives, men, women, children, pouring into the little town, helpless,half dead from fright and exhaustion. On the forenoon of this day a recruiting party for the United States Army hadleft New Ulm in wagons, with a band, to go to Milford, a small town some eightmiles away. This party was just crossing a bridge over a gully near Milford, whena volley was fired into them from the surrounding bushes, and three of .the peoplein the first wagon fell dead to the ground; they were the first victims of the Indiansfrom New Ulm.
