Text Appearing Before Image:
tered three well-armed Mexicanswhom he knew to be in league with the rebel cause and to have violated the laws ofthis country. The young soldier appreciated that their very presence on United States territorywas in open defiance of the authority of his own government, and he said to himself:These fellows may trifle with the laws of their own country, but by God they wontdo it with mine! And with almost reckless boldness he dashed right up to thethree rebels and demanded their surrender. When his demand was ignored heopened up on them, and in a sharp but short conflict had one of them wounded, thehorse of another killed and the third one put to flight. He searched his prisoners and took from them some papers which proved to bedocuments of extreme importance concerning the Garza rebellion, and which con-tained the details of a plan for an organized invasion of United States territory. Soimportant was the seizure of these papers that Walker received the Medal of Honoras a fitting reward.
Text Appearing After Image:
335 THE BEAR ISLAND UPRISING EARLY in October, 1898, an Indian uprising occurred at the Bear Island, Reser-vation of the Chippewas, in Minnesota, which caused much more excitementthan it deserved, and was squelched within a week. In its scope it was really noth-ing more serious than an armed resistance of several hundred Indians against theexecution of an order from the government, but it led to a tierce fight and for atime threw the whole country into a state of anxiety, because a repetition of theCuster massacre was feared. When reliable information from the seat of thetrouble reached the War Department, and not only failed to confirm the first wildrumors, but brought news of the safety of the military detachment, the minds ofthe people were relieved and public excitement died away. The cause of this disturbance was a peculiar one, and dated back at least oneyear. An unscrupulous white man was arrested and taken to Daluth, Minn., for sellingwhisky to Indians on the reservation.
