soon as it was light enoughto allow the positions of the enemy to be determined with accuracy the cruiserCharleston and the captured gunboat Callao should take part in the fight. At day-light these two warships took up positions and opened fire on the enemy north ofthe city. Later the monitor Monadnock was ordered to cover the Filipinos to thesouth of Manila. The positions of the enemy were accurately located and the war-ships poured a heavy fire into them. The losses of the natives by this bombardmentwere very heavy. To the north and south of the city the slaughter was sickening. Filipinos wereliterally torn into shreds by the fire from the warships. In some places the shellstore great holes in the earth and around these were scattered the dead bodies. Thegreat number of dead that were afterward found everywhere showed that thenatives were not lacking in courage, but no courage could withstand the terriblerain of death that fell upon them as the Americans approached their positions.

— 421 — When the enemy retreated it was to get out of the range of the American guns asL-apidly as possible. Of the American forces in the battle the Fourteenth United States Infantry suf-fered the greatest losses. The regiment was quartered at Malate, under command ofMajor Rabe, and was assigned to the task of carrying the rebel position south of thatsuburb. The men fought through a country covered with a dense undergrowth, andmade slow progress at first. The natives took refuge in nipa-covered huts, and untilthey were dislodged and driven back inflicted considerable damage on the Ameri-cans. The Fourteenth was armed with Krag-Jorgenson rifles, and these weaponsproved most effective. For every life that the gallant old regiment gave it took ascore in revenge. The First Washington Volunteers and Third United States Artillery also sawsevere fighting and sustained material losses.
