DescriptionDepth charge throwers on HMS Whitehall July 1941 IWM A 4667.jpg |
English: IWM caption : Anti-Submarine Weapons: The Fairlie Mortar, better known as the "Five Wide Virgins" installed on the forecastle of HMS Whitehall. The weapon was not a success and was withdrawn from service. Comment : this is not in fact the Fairlie mortar, which fired 20 x 20-pound projectiles. This appears to show the experimental Thornycroft long-range depth charge thrower. |
