Everything considered, the trestle or inclinedplane type seemed to be the best for the purpose. The sand dryer is on the sar>e trestle as the coal pockets ,and is located at their east end. It is of the ordinary type, siftedsand being dropped from cars on the track above dov/n through a net-work of steam pipes which thoroughly dry it, and it is gathered ina bin at the bottom, from whence it is carried by bucket elevatorsto the bins sbove. From these bins, the supply spouts pour it di-rectly into the sand chambers of the engines. The bottom of thesand bins is on the same elevation as the bottom of the coal pockets,hence, the sand runs readily to the locomotive. Onthe outside walls of these troughs are the engine tracks, so i^lacedthat the discharged ashes shall slide dovm the concrete Z-iope intothe rectangular basins. Between these basins is a track on which th<cars are loaded by a clarn-shelJ hoist from a five ton gantry crane. The outside wall of the trapezoidal area at the to is madeup of a nar^ow inside wall 3 ft. wide with buttresses 1 ft. 10 in.by 4 ft. 10 it:, projecting outv/ard and placed ten feet center tocenter.
