Sedan Chairs in Exeter.—The introduction ofmechanically driven cabs into Devon recalls the fact that it isless than seventy years since Sedan chairs disappeared fromthe streets of Exeter. The fares as set out in the ExetevJournal up to and including 1841 were (except for the year1837) as follows:—For carrying one person any distance notexceeding 300 yards, 6d.; 300-450 yards, gd.; 450-600, 1/-;600-860, 1/3; 860-1,000, 1/6; 1,000-1,260, 2/-; 1,260-1,520,2/6; 1,520-1 mile, 3/- R.B.M.

Restoration of Ancient Chasuble to BarnstapleChurch.—The beautiful chasuble which we here illustratehas recently been restored to Barnstaple Church by Mrs.Peard, in whose family it has been for nearly three hundredand fifty years. In 1562 John Peard and Nicholas Whichalseawere Churchwardens. The chasuble is referred to in aninventory of church goods made in 1560, and its restorationto the Church is a matter for congratulation. As can be seenfrom the illustrations it is of very beautiful workmanship andits excellent state of preservation is no doubt due to thecare which the Peard family have taken of it. Eds. 104.
