e period when I examined him.With the consent of his parents, I decided to placehim in one of my new appliances with retention, 66 cutting out from the leather stretched acrossthe rods a sufficient opening to admit of thedrainage from the knee. The limb soon becamestraight; the leg was bandaged with flannel,inclusive of the machine, up to the knee andfrom thence to the thigh, but leaving the kneeexposed. The only treatment applied to theknee was frequent washing with water, and alittle cotton and oil to prevent the opening inthe joint from scabbing, and the joint becomingdistended with pus. It is too frequently thepractice to surround the joint with a poulticeor a mercurial ointment, a proceeding veryinjurious, and a remnant of the surgery of themiddle ages. The patient was under treatment for fiveyears; during this period he had an attack ofkidney disease on one occasion, and fever onanother. This case ultimately attained a perfectrecovery.
