Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Strong winds continued to blow dust across Argentina and over the South Atlantic Ocean through early November 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on November 4.

A broad band of dust blows across the green land south of the tan, sediment-filled Rio de la Plata. The band then broadens as it curves over the South Atlantic. In addition, a fine brown haze (dust) spreads offshore, hanging over the ocean and under small banks of white cloud.

Underneath the dust, the normally blue waters are tinted in shades of green. This may be a direct result of dusty sediment in the water. Sediment can appear either tan, light green, or dark green depending on the amount and depth of sediment. The color of the water may also indicate the presence of phytoplankton in the water. Phytoplankton are tiny plant-like organisms that grown rapidly with sunlight, water temperatures, and nutrients exist in the correct quantities. Dust can supply a source of iron and other nutrients which may dissolve in water and spur growth of phytoplankton.

Dust storms are a common occurrence in this region. An early image of this particular storm, captured on November 3, was the MODIS Image of the Day on November 8. This image can be seen at https://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/individual.php?db_date=2016-11-08
