Summary
[edit]DescriptionDust over the Red Sea (MODIS 2018-05-13).jpg |
English: A heavy veil of dust blew over the Red Sea in early May 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on May 10.
A broad layer of tan dust stretches from Sudan and Eritrea in the west to Saudi Arabia (east). While the landscape can be seen through the dust, the blue waters of the Red Sea appear tan from the overlying haze. On both its eastern and western sides, the Red Sea is bordered by some of the world’s most prolific dust-producing regions, including the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) of the Arabian Peninsula and, in northern Africa, the Sahara Desert. Shifting winds mean that dust can blow in either direction, from the Arabian Peninsula or Africa. |
