Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A major dust storm swirled over the Middle East and North Africa for the better part of a week in September 2015, causing disruption of life in many heavy populated areas. According to several press reports, the storms killed at least five people and sickened many others, especially those with respiratory disease.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the storm on September 11, as the dust was beginning to subside. The MODIS instrument first picked up significant activity on September 6, when a thick plume of dust swept across Syria. By September 7, the plume was sweeping Syria, part of Jordan and part of Turkeys Mediterranean coast. The next day dust enveloped all of Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus and the Palestine Territories, then it moved over northeast Egypt and the Gulf of Suez. In this image, dust continues over most of the area covered on September 8, but has thinned enough to be able to begin to see land beneath the tan veil in a few places.

NASAs Earth Observatory recently published images of the dust storm which followed it from September 6 through September 8. The story can be seen here: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=86571
