Title
Early MEdieval silver finger ring
Description
English: A white metal finger ring. The shape of the finger-ring is distorted, presumably as the result of agricultural activity while it was in the ground. The band of this finger ring has a rectangular cross-section. It is constructed from one length of silver wire which is bent round to form the band and then the ends overlap and curl around the band forming two slip knots.

Dimensions: length: 23.21mm; width: 21.21mm; thickness of band: 1.76mm; weight: 2.70g.

Discussion: Finger rings of a similar knotted design, but of either round section or strip, have been commonly found in Viking graves and hoards of the later 9th and earlier 10th centuries (Graham-Campbell 1980). An example was found at Coppergate, York, dating to between circa 930 - circa 1050 (Mainman, p2585, fig. 1279, no. 10517). A plain, narrow strip example has also been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database PAS-AE4050. But simple knotted rings like this can also be dated to the 19th-20th century and these are typically of rectangular section, such as this example from Ropley. Viking examples are usually of either round section or strip.

Without a context, the date of the Ropley ring is extremely uncertain.
